GOVERNMENT IN BUSINESS
Sir, —When a citizen or company borows money to cover a deficit while insolvent and declares a profit he or they are called a . But, if a Government does the, same thing, there apears to be no comment. Quite recently we got this from the Minister of Mines during the supplementary estimates in debate, when he stated that the coal mines were showing a profit. Then why was it that the coal mines were being subsidised to the tune of £2,000,000? The Minister said they had to be subsidised to show a profit. As all subsidies rob Peter and pay Paul by direct or inderect txation, and we are paying heavy taxation on such enterprises that are under Government control, I would suggest that it was a simple-minded Government that gave a simpleminded public, such a ‘simple’ answer. '-V Well, if the people are not s»simple they will give the- answer at the polls and demand results at the hustings, not lip service. Yours etc., W. BRADSHAW.
