Assaulted Referee After Rugby Match Rotorua-Whakatane
Charges of disorderly behaviour were prefererd against Spadie Merito, labourer, of Wairaka, and Kennedy Lawson, driver, of Whakatane,' before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Rotorua, Both pleaded guilty by letter.
Sergeant J. H. Quartley said that the incident happened at Arawa Park during a Rugby football match between Whakatane and Rotorua. At the conclusion of the game, which ended in a draw, the two men asaulted the referee but the affair W?;s stopped by Whakatane supporters. The incident could have been serious, he said. Mr Freeman imposed fines of £2 (costs 15s) in each case.
