Motor Cycling

ATTEMPT TO BE MADE ON OKOPE RECORD On Sunday the Bay of Plenty Motor Cycle Club will be holding the annual “Certificate Day” on Ohope Beach. Contrary to popular opinion this does not consist of a series of motor cycle beach races; although it is possible that one or two of these events may be held if sufficient riders desire to participate.

“Certificate Day” is. the occasion when 'Club members make electrical- > ly timed runs over the half mile, and receive a certificate to . show their official mean speed. All types of motor cycles from the “hot” facers to the small two-strokes are: eligible to ' compete. Several Car owners have requested permission to try their speedometers against; electric-timing and this should., be very interesting. The main feature of the day '.will be Frank Cameron’s attempt on the r-;. Ohope Beach record. This was es-c . tablished by Dick Whittle on an Excelsiof-J.A.P. in 1939, when 'he>f averaged 101.4 m.p.h. Many have; :;- attempted to exceed this during the years, but without success.
