CHAMBER SUPPORT HARBOUR SCHEME AT WHAKATANE

Urgent representations are to be made by the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce to the Commissioner of Works, the Minister of State Forests and the member of parliament for the Bay of Plenty, Mr W. Sullivan, for consideration of ihe proposal to construct a deep water harbour at the Whakatane Heads as an outlet for the timber and other produce from the central Bay of Plenty. This was decided at a special meeting of the Chamber this week. The Chamber is also to .provide all available data about the cost and advantages of such a port at Whakatane.

An outline of the scheme was given by Mr C. H. Brebner, consulting engineer to the Whakatane Harbour Board, who also drafted the preliminary plans for the project. He was assisted by Mr A. E. Shaw, a civil engineer of the Whakatane Board Mills, who gave information about the savings in cost of transport in having a port at Whakatane. It was also decided to set up a committee to contact all interested authorities likely to be interetsed

; in the harbour scheme. The comT"- mittee is the president, Mr R. T. - Morpeth, and MessrS"B. Butler and H. G. Warren.
