Whakatane Handles More Cargo Than Other Forts

Almost since the three ports of the Bay of Plenty, Whakatane, Opotiki and Tauranga, have, been used Whakatane has handled more cargo tonnage than the other two combined. Possibly because of its central position and the great Rangitaiki Plains behind the port has been the one used as an outlet and inlet for a huge amount of produce and imports. Over the past 15 years the tonnage handled by all the ports has decreased slightly, but again Whakatane has been well ahead of the other two. The figures for the past two years bear this out. The following are the port figures for the year ended December 1948:

1947: t Vessels Net Total Tonnage Manifest

Opotiki 55 5,855 13,454 It can be noticed from the figures that Tauranga handles, larger vessels but the amount of cargo is very much below that of Whakatane.

Vessels Net Total Tonnage i Manifest Tonnage Tauranga 94 13,455 18,344 Whakatane 128 10,971 35,078 Opotiki 56 5,699 11,932 For the year ended December.

Tauranga 118 13,843 Tonnage 17,148 Whakatane 105 10,567 35,447
