Aborigines To Have Federal Vote
Australian aborigines this year have been given the right to vote in Federal Government elections for the first time in 48 years. None had been admitted to the Commonwealth electoral rolls since Federation in 1901. The Commonwealth Electoral Act has been amended this year to give the right of enrolment to aborigines on State rolls in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, and in all States to aborigines who served in the defence forces.
