OUTSTANDING PROGRESS OF PONY CLUB
Formed just after the last A. and P. Show, the Whakatane District Pony Club has made outstanding progress in its few months of existence. Comprising five branches with a total membership of 168, the Club has more than realised the hopes of the few enthusiasts who started it at a meeting in the cricket pavilion after the show.
The achievement is the more meritorious in that such progress has been made during the winter months, normally an “off” season for Pony Club activities. Commenting on the Club’s work and progress the retiring District Commissioner, Mr G. D. Fogerty, told a well-attended annual meeting on Wednesday night that its growth was due largely to the work of a few enthusiasts, notably the secretary, Mrs R. Cobbe, the head instructor, Mr C. D. Blomfield, and the other instructors in town and country who had sacrificed much of their leisure time to get the Club organised and begin its work of coaching young riders. The balance sheet showed £lB 19s 6d more in receipts than'in expenditure. Officers elected: President, Mr E. Herd; district commissioner, Mr C. D. Blomfield; secretary, Mrs R. Cobbe; treasurer, Mr A. Palairet; committee, Messrs C. Zinsli, D. C. Stevens (Whakatane), Mrs Howard, Mr L. Davis (White Pine Bush), Messrs N. Reid, G. Yeoman (Taneatua), Messrs E. Henry, C. Tee (Thornton-Matata), Mrs H. T. Burr and Mr J. Thomas (Te Teko); head instructor, Mr H. Hill; delegates to Association conference, Mrs Cobbe and Mr Blomfield.
