NO PROVISION FOR LIGHTING ON NEW TRAFFIC BRIDGE

“I have received certain information, which I hope to verify any day, that no provision is being made for lighting on the new traffic bridge now under construction, by the erection of concrete standards, as is the case with other such bridges,” declared the acting chairman, Mr H. M. Cartel’, at the annual meeting of the Edgecumbe Progressive Association. However, fuil inquiries are to be instituted and if necessary, adequate lighting is to be asked for the bridge. Mr Carter said that solely as a result of a public meeting called by the Association and a strong resolution being sent to the Whakatane County Council the present traffic bridge was extensively repaired, allowing it to be used by vehicles and loads up to 12 tons. Because of the lack of labour and materials work on sound proofing the public telephone box and improving the post office facilities had been delayed but up to the present there had -been an improvement, the acting chairman said. Three members of the Domain Board and three members of the Association had been formed into a committee to discuss the possibilities of establishing a memorial hall and community centre at Edgecumbe, Mr Carter continued. A tremendous amount of inquiries were made and outside committees interviewed but with little success. Most of the outside areas preferred to set their own halls right first before they could offer any assistance. However, it was generally conceded that Edgecumbe was the rightful place for a district memorial as projected but it was felt that when the necessary land was secured it would be a better time to make a definite approach. A permanent , committee has been formed to go ahead and endeavour to acquire a site and raise money. During the year the Association’s funds were augmented to the extent of £lB 11s as the result of a competition conducted by the treasurer, Mr R. J. Barnes. Mr Carter appealed for an' increased membership of the Association and expressed the hope that the coming year would bring more success .for the betterment-of Edgeicumbe and the district. Officers elected: —

Chairman, Mr H. M. Carter; secretary, Mr G. King; treasurer, Mr J. Bdrnes; auditor, Mr B. Graham; publicity officer, Mrs T. G. Roberts; committee, Messrs D. G. Hawkins, D. C. Meikle, I. B. Gow, D. S. Radclifie, W. Cowie, P. Bridger.
