RAPID EROSION AT OHOPE BEACH IS MENACING ROAD
further move to have something done about repairing the road and halting erosion on the portion of OKope Beach known as 1 to 58 was taken by property holders of the area when they met the works committee of the Whakatafte County Council at the beach on Wednesday. The whole question was discussed with both parties putting forward their., views. The press was not admitted to the meeting.
The area called 1 to 58 extends from the main road to the beach from Whakatane, back along towards Otarawairere. The road along this area runs over private land and is not controlled by the County Council. At the present time' the sea is rdpidly eroding into the bank and fears are felt for the road and the property fronting it if something is not done soon to stop the erosion. At the present rate of erosion the life of the road will- not be long if something is not is not so bad but in others the sea has reached and actually eaten into the road. In these portions rock has been placed and has halted the destruction in the meantime. The road is an undedicated one and the County Council contends that it is not obliged to have anything to do with it. On the other hand property owners afraid of the sea, say that they have been paying rates for years and do not appear to be getting anything back. They are not worried about having the road dedicated at present. All they want is the Council to do something to halt the rapidly increasing erosion by the sea. Only 20 Feet To Go In front of one property the sea has started on the road and has only about 20 feet to go before it will be lapping against the hinges of the front gate. This is about the worst portion affected so far. Telegraph poles are leading a precarious life and, one in particular, owes its present stand to the stubborness of an outcrop of the bank that has so far defied the sea. But its life is numbered too.
The road has a firm foundation and is used by buses. Nearer the Ohope Hostel there is little erosion, most of it taking place towards the western end. Then it is only iii patches but its progress in some parts has been extremely rapid. Some enterprising section holders have laid logs and rock to stop the direct attack by the sea. Most of them, however, want a series of groins constructed, to help build up the beach again. '
