Edgecumbe Card Evening There was a fair attendance at the ‘fortnightly card evening of the Edgecumbe Parent-Teacher Association on Monday night. Prizes were won by Mrs Andrews and Mr P. Parsons. Mr Sutherland and Mrs Hill won the booby prizes.
New Installations
Eleven lighting and heating installations were tested and granted during the past month, the electrical engineer, Mr F. Lvsagbt, reported to-the Whakatane Borough Council. This also included alterations and additions. Other installations were six ranges, seven cylinders and five motors.
Basketball Courts .Wanted The Whakatane Basketball Association has applied to the Whakatane Domain Board asking for an allocation of permanent grounds, assistance in constructing sealed courts and other playing facilities. This was contained in a request received at Monday night’s meeting of the Board.
Edgecumbe 'Hockey Ball A meeting on Monday night made final arrangements for the Edgecumbe Hockey Club’s first ball, which is to be held tomorrow night. A town caterer has been hired to provide the supper, which is planned on a lavish scale, and a tasty claret cup is to provide incidental refreshment. The Grand March will “bully off” at 9.15. Course For Food Handlers An all round improvement in the standard of food handling in Whakatane eating houses and all other food -premises is expected by the Health Inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, after a course in food handling is held at Whakatane. Recently he attended a course at Gisborne and it is expected that a similar meeting, including films and talks, will be held soon at Whakatane.
Support For Rail Link Full support for the linking up of the two railheads of the East Coast Railway is being given by the Labour Party movement in Gisborne. The composition of the Gisborne delegation which met Opotiki representatives at Matawai on a recent week-end was largely the work o£ Mr E. C. Richards, a member of the Gisborne Labour Representation Committee. The aspirants for the Labour nomination at the forthcoming general election were members of the party.
