No Increase In Riding Allowance To Country Children
No increase was contemplated at present in the conveyance allow-* ance for children riding to school on horseback, said the Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs), replying to a letter from the general secretary of Federated Farmers (Mr A. P. O’Shea) which sought a higher allowance. The present riding allowances were 6d a school day for eligible children riding less than five miles to school and 8d a school day for children riding greater distances. These allowances were two-;thirds of the ordinary conveyance allowance for eligible children travelling to and from school in wheeled vehicles, said the Minister. Because of the greater expense in maintaining wheeled vehicles he thought that the present horseback allowance was reasonable and therefore, there would be no increase.
