Extensive Highways Improvement Work In Bay Of Plenty
Extensive works were being carried out as resources permitted on the Rotorua :/ county section of the Rotorua-Whakatane State Highway over the length pine miles to 25 miles, stated the annual report of the Commissioner of Works, Mr E. R. McKillop, presented to the House of Representatives last week. Heavy reconstruction was at present proceeding, chiefly between 14 miles and 16 miles. Adjacent to Te Teko a length of five miles had been prepared for early sealing, v/hile 65 chains between Awakeri and Whakatane had been resealed. On the Whakatane-Gisborne via Waioeka State Highway reconstruction work which had been proceeding on the Waimana Gorge was now taking shape and a length of two miles had been completed. Reconstruction over five miles between the Waiotahi and Waioeka Bridges was ’ well advanced in preparation for early sealing next season. Between Whakatane and - Taneatua one mile 52 chains was sealed, and the early sealing of the remaining two miles was projected, added the report. A length of two miles past Taneatua, and the Waioeka Straight of four miles, were also sealed. Dustless surfacing now extended from Whakatane to near the Waimana Gorge and from the Waioeka River Bridge to the Waioeka Gorge. Heavy maintenance was in hand between the Waimana Gorge and Kutarere. On the Te Teko-Awakeri via Edgecumbe highway, a major bridge work had been commenced with the erection of a reinforced _ concrete structure over the Rangitaiki River at Edgecumbe, concluded the report. On the Opotiki-Te Araroa State Highway, a considerable amount of widening and minor improvement work had been carried out
