General Roll Closing The general roll to be used at the general election in November will close on Monday next, September 5.
Final Referendum Figures The final figures for the Bay of Plenty Electorate in connection with the recent Compulsory Military Training Poll are as follows: For the proposal, 8,277; against the proposel, 1,232; total valid votes, 9,559.
Post Office Staff The total staff of the Post and Telegraph Department in New Zealand at March 31 was 16,277, according to the annual report of the Postmaster General presented . to Parliament. At the same time last year the total was 15,745. Class Room For Kutarere The old Taneatua School has been moved, portion of it going to Kutarere School to provide an extra class room there, while the other half has been moved to the site of the new Taneatua School. Mr G. Griffiths has undertaken the contract of moving the building.
Two Rugby Tests Two New Zealand rugby teams will be playing test matches tomorrow. At Wellington New Zealand will meet the Australians in the first test of the Wallaby tour while in South Africa New Zealand plays the Springboks in the third test. Both games are being broadcast by 2YA Wellington. Rural Boxholders There is a considerable increase in the number of rural boxholders in New Zealand this year compared with the {lumber registered last year; stated the Postmasler * General in his annual report. At March 31 the boxholders totalled 47,230, an increase of 0.658 on the previous year.
Newspaper Lead 1948 Advertising - American newspapers led all other media with 36.2 per cent of the total dollar outlay, for all advertising in >1948 which was at a new high of 4,830,700,000 dollars, a gain of 13.4 per cent over 1947, according to an estimate by Printers’ Ink. Radio was next with 12.4 per cent; direct mail with 11.9 per cent and magazines with 10;6 per cent. Post Office Savings The total savings bonds, certificates and war accounts invested in the post office in New Zealand now makes the sum of £205,805.808. This is made up of £755,112.945 in the post office savings bank, £11,447,755 in war.gratuity accounts, £34,696,563 of national savings accounts, £4,■*67.294 in war savings and £81,251 in post office investment certificates.
