Awaiti Players To Give Public Show At Edgecumbe Soon
Encouraged by their recent sircess with “Sanctuary” at Rotorua, the Awaiti Players are rehearsing that and other plays to present a public show at Edgecumfce on September 8 before going to Palmerston North to represent tt e Rotorua area of the British Drama League at the festival there on September 10 and 12. The winning team at Palmerston North will be eligible to contest the New Zealand finals at Wellington and, if successful there, might evengo to Australia. Of the Awaiti Players’ performance of “Sanctuary” at Rotorua the adjudicator, Mr W. J. Mount joy jr, said:— “This was the outstanding play of the festival. The cast created atmosphere and made us ‘feel.’ It was artistically produced. “Mother Marie (Eve Carr) was extremely good; she did not make one false inflection. The Widow Pensol (Lou Peck), gave a performance that was deep and real, with emotional feeling.” Others in the cast whose performance were praised by the “Rotorua Post’s” critic were Minnie Steenson, Ruth Campbell, Kathleen Armstrong, Jean Murray and Nancy Briggs. Once the . Palmerston North festival is over, the Players plan to keep the ball rolling, and to enlarge their membership as much as possible. They are trying now to enrol male members to enrich' their castings and give wider variety to the plays they can present successfully.
