District Delegate Reports On St JohnRed Cross Council
Their Excellencies Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg were present at the annual meeting of the Joint Council of St John and Red Cross held in Wellington last week, and which Mrs A. W. Winstone attended as a Red Cross delegate. Sir Bernard in his address to the Council, said greater expenditure must be faced up to with the opening of two veterans’ homes, one in the South Island and one at Okoirire. Also the question of admitting non-pensionable cases to the Red Cross Homes must be considered. Sir James Elliott, the chairman, who has recently returned from attending a Cancer Research Conference overseas, said the question bristled with difficulties. The Joint Council is expending agent for the Sick and Wounded Fund, and must watch the expenditure strictly, seeing that none eligible were excluded and none mot eligible included.
Plans are prepared for re-build-ing the Rannerdale Home in Christchurch and alterations and rebuilding are under consideration for the three other homes. Mr A. E. Gibbons, Dominion Chairman of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, was elected Chairman.
