RECORD CROWD AT MANAWAHE SCHOOL BALL

Before a record attendance of relatives and visitors, the children of the Manawahe School held their Annual Fancy Dress Ball and entertainment in the Manawahe Hall last Thursday evening. The great variety of excellent fancy dresses in which the children were arrayed added colour and gaiety to a scene of animation and excitement. For almost two hours, with hardly a break, the children took part in fifteen different folk dances and a series of 1 maypole dances. Between dances they entertained the audience with unison and part songs and verse speaking items. Colleen Purvis of Standard I presented a much appreciated tap dance.

As a result of their efforts during the evening, the children were on excellent form for the final item on their programme, supper, which was served by the wives of School Committee members. At the conclusion of supper, Mr Jones, Chairman of the School Committee, thanked Mr and Mrs Reid for their work in training the children for the evening and thanked the parents for their co-operation in providing their children with such excellent fancy dresses. On behalf of the committee, to mark their appreciation of the children's efforts, he then presented each child with a cake of chocolate. The remainder of the evening was devoted to a dance for the adults present.
