WHAKATANE WINS SCHOOL TOURNAMENT
Being unbeaten against all teams Whakatane A won the combined Bay of Plenty primary schools’ basketball tournament held at Tauranga on Friday. A Whakatane B team also took part and after losing only two games came third. Seven teams took part in the tournament but in their six games Whakatane A played good basketball to gain convincing wins in each case. The players who showed up were W. McGarvey, goalie, D. Hakeke, centre, and J. Ratene, defence.
The B team lost only to Whakatane A and very narrowly to Tauranga A. The outstanding players were E. Ranapia, goalie, C. Carter, centre, and J. Tukurua, defence. The Whakatane teams consisted of pupils from the primary schools in the Whakatane district. Results of Whakatane games:— Whakatane A v Rangitaiki A. won
, 13—8, v Tauranga . A won 7—5, Tauranga B won 6—3, Rotorua A won 7—2, Rangitaiki B won 9—4, Whakatane B won 7—l. . Whakatane B v Rangitaiki B won 6 —5, Tauranga A lost B—7,8 —7, Tauranga B won 11—10, Whakatane A lost 7—l, Rangitaiki A won 6—4, Rotorua A won 5—3. WHAKATANE LOSES SHIELD TO TAURANGA . Showing a reversal of form over there previous games this season Whakatane were well defeated by Tauranga in a representative basketball- match for the Miriata Shield at Whakatane on Saturday. At no stage did Whakatane, the defenders, look like winning, Tau_ ranga eventually gaining a clear cut win of 30—9. In other games Tauranga Maoris beat Whakatane B 16—12 in a very close game while in a further even match,.. Tauranga B narrowly won 15—13 from Whakatane C.
