LONG LIST OF TAX EVADERS PUBLISHED
Two pages of the New Zealand Gazette are occupied by three schedules under the heading, “Names of Tax Evaders.” The first schedule contains 16 names, and lists the amount of tax to be paid and the amount of penal tax imposed on persons convicted of wilfully making false information. The second is a list of 67 persons who have been charged with penal tax for evading or attempting to evade the payment of income tax or making the payment of income tax or making default in the performance of any duty imposed by the Act with intent to evade the payment of income tax. The third lists 13 persons or firms who have been subjected to a penal charge for failure to deduct or account for social security charge and national security tax from wages. The highest amount imposed as penal tax in the first two groups is £SOOO, and others are £4OOO, £3OOO and lesser amounts down to £25. Penal taxes collected during the year ended March 31 totalled £52,747.
