High Awards For Red Cross Service

Mr Macrae, President North Taranaki Centre, welcomed delegates and Red Cross members to a social evening in connection with the annual meeting of the Dominion Council of the Red. Cross Society. Highlight of the evening was the presentation by the Dominion vicepresident, Mrs H. Lowry, of the Florence Nightingale medal, to Miss H. Iris Crooke (who has several times visited Whakatane), Director General R.C.V. and a recent delegate to the International Red Cross Conference held in Sweden.

Mrs Lowry said the bestowal of the medal by the Florence Nightingale Foundation was a high honour and this was only the third one to be awarded in New Zealand. Miss Crooke was greeted with applause and cheers, and spontaneous singing of “She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”

Mrs Lowry also presented the badge of Counsellor of Honour (the N.Z. Red Cross Society’s highly prized award) to Mr Griffiths, for many years president of North Taranaki Centre and prominent in R.C. work since the 1914/18 war

Guests were intensely intern ted in a screening of the sound film of the International Red Cross Conference held in Sweden last year, and
