Whakatane Street Named Tuhoe Avenue
A new street formed off Stewart Street is to be called Tuhoe Avenue, it was decided at Monday night’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. Providing access to the new block of State houses now being constructed at Whakatane the street is the\ newest one in the borough to be named. Considerable discussion centred on a possible name before Tuhoe Avenue was finally adopted. The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, said that a simple but appropriate name was desirable.
Being a Maori centre, seeped well in ancient Maori history Cr C. S. Armstrong suggested Tuhoe Crescent after the tribe that was strong in the district about Whakatane. Other councillors considered the name was appropriate but the Crescent was changed to Avenue because of the shape of the street.
