TEACHERS’ BOARD PROBLEM TACKLED AT EDGECUMBE

“Where board cannot be procured for less than £2 weekly the Education Board be asked to subsidise teachers’ salaries to cover the extra cost of board. Failing that to provide hostels for teachers.” This is the wording of a remit drafted by the executive committee of the Edgecumbe Parent-Teacher Association, which is to be sent for consideration by the annual conference of the Auckland Federation of Par-ent-Teacher Associations at Auck_ land this month. The remit was the outcome of a full discussion of the boarding * position, which is now presenting a very serious problem at Edgecumbe. The Association considered that as the position throughout the country was not improving the Education Board should be asked to take a hand in the matter. Through lack of suitable board the teaching profession was slowly being killed. "The headmaster, Mr R. J. Pattisori, pointed out that a hostel at Edgecumbe could serve three schools Edgecumbe, Thornton and Otakiri, and would be a very satisfactory solution to the problem. Other members agreed that if board could not be obtained in some centres hostels would provide a solution to the problem.
