New Pumping Plant m New pumping plant for the Wha- IJ katane Water Works Department is now in transit and is expected to arrive in New Zealand early next month.
New Installations / Twelve lighting and heating in- ■ stalations were connected by thq — Whakatane Borough Electrical Department last month. There were six connections to motors and four ranges and cylinders. New Substation
Necessary to supply several new houses a 25 K.V.A. single pole sub. station Has been erected in the Pah area, it was reported to the Whakatane Borough Council this week. This will also improve voltage to existing consumers.
Substation For Hillcrest . - A new 150 K.V.A. transformer is to be purchased to replace- the existing one at Hillcrest, according to the borough electrical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght. The present installation is to be"used to assist the McGarvey Road substation.
Bell For St George’s So far all efforts to procure a new bell for St George’s Church, Whakatane, have failed. The matter has been under action by the vestry 7 for some time, but letters to the"' Naval Department at Bevonport and to an engineering firm at Thames have brought no results. Welcome, Stranger !
“Someone said recently that St George’s gives no welcome to visitors coming to it,” said the Vicar, Rev J. C. J. Wilson, in his annual, report to parishioners. “Possibly we could borrow an idea from the Presbyterians and ask people to make it their job on certain Sundays to spy out and welcome newcomers ”
Ploughing Match Although arrangements for a. ploughing match have almost been completed a paddock has yet to be found to hold the event it was revealed at the monthly meeting of the Otakiri Young Farmers’ Club, presided over by Mr J. Reid. The venue of the race is to be decided when suitable' paddocks can be obtained. The Club decided to visit the Whakatane Board Mills on August 30.
Sold Quickly Within ten minutes after the box plan opened 70 seats for the Bay of Plenty v- Australia rugby match at Whakatane on August 20 were were completely sold out at Whakatane yesterday. Opened at 1.30 p.m.. all the seats were completely reserved by 1.40 and there was a waiting list containing about forty names. The interest in the game is well illustrated in this rush and arrangements are being made to make more seats available.
