MAYOR FAVOURS NEW BRIDGE SITE FURTHER DOWN

Disapproval of the proposed site for the new traffic bridge to Whakatane and the new main highway to be built from it to Valley Road was expressed by the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, at this week’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. He urged that all local bodies unite in choosing a suitable site for the bridge and the new main highway into the town.

There had been several suggested sites for the bridge, Mr Barry said, but the Main Hghways Board had selected a site just above the present structure. Another position was at the board mills but this had not found universal favour. Another was to link up further down the river from the present bridge with Hinemoa Street. “This one appeals to me and I think it would provide satisfactory routes to the town, the main -one coming in over the mud flats on the river bank. This would also make a handy stop bank to the low lying areas,” the Mayor added. But, whatever site was chosen it had to be on the unanimous decision of the Whakatane Borough and County Councils and the Whakatane Harbour Board. Cr W. Sullivan said he did not think the new site was a particularly wise one ag there was now serious erosion into the bank in that part of the river. Cr H. G. Warren: I think a. water. I front road to the town would be a beautiful development for Whakatane and a wonderful thing for the Borough. There was one fact the Council had to remember, Cr E. R. Dillicar pointed out. State and main highways would not be built into towns if it could possibly be avoided. It would cost quite a bit of money to build a road round the waterfront, Cr Sullivan remarked. If the local bodies made some effort to contribute to the cost he thought that there was some chance of obtaining such a highway. Further discussion was curtailed and the Mayor arranged for a special meeting of the Council next week when -the whole of the town planning scheme will be discussed fully.
