Brigadier Went "On The Mat" For Being Indiscreet

When the Eighth Army was having its growing pains he had written to his wife that all was not well, said -Major-General Sir Howard Kippenberger in an address recently.

He had written also that a certain general outside the New Zealand Division had no more .idea of running an army than Mrs Kippenberger. As luck would have it, this was one of his letters that the censor opened. Sir Howard (then Brigadier) Kippenberger said, and the censor took a dim view of it.

So did General Auchinleck, who sent an order to General Freyberg pointing out this brigadier’s breach. In due course, Sir Howard said, he had gone on the mat before General Freyberg, who tore up the letter' without reading it, and with the remark that the letter apparently had been indiscreet.

There the incident ended, which was typical of General Freyberg.
