POLL ON MILITARY TRAINING CARRIED IN BAY OF PLENTY
Along with the remainder of New Zealand electors in the Bay cf Plenty on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly in favour of compulsory n military training. Of the 9046 votes ; cast by Europeans 7745 were in '"/•favour of the scheme, 1234 against it while 26 were informal. The number of votes cast were slightly more than those recorded in the March referendum, although only about half of the total number on the Bay of Plenty roll bothered to record a vote. Of the 405 Maoris who voted 256 supported compulsory military training. In all Bay of Plenty centres compulsory military training was supported and on the final count -t was carried by a majority of 86 per cent. At Whakatane 701 voted for the measure as against 117 who voted against it. Twenty-eight Maoris in .this area supported it, having only \a majority of seven over those who objected to the scheme. Most of the voting at Whakatane was an increase on the March poll. In most cases booths were busier but nowhere was there much inter- ■ est shown. f Fewer votes were cast in the country districts but here again there was a distinct majority in favour of the proposal.
