Whakatane D.H.S. Beats Te Puke At Rugby & Basketball
All round superiority in both basketball and rugby was shown by the Whakatane District High School over teams from the Te Puke High School in the annual inter-school games at Whakatane on Friday. Of the five games played -Whakatane won the two rugbv "fixtures and the three basketball matches, all by substantial margins.
The senior rugby game for the Ts Kani Shield, awarded to the champion team among the Bay of Plenty High Schools, was won by Whakatane 23 —16. The home team was always superior and never looked like losing. Tries for Whakatane were scored by Brown (2), Wano, Lion, White, Wano and Brown converting two each. The Whakatane light weights completely overwhelmed Te Puke by 31 —0. Tries for Whakatane, Wilson (2), Paterson (2), O’Brien, Flay, Raureti, Keepa, Alley with Wilson converting two. Basketball Playing brilliantly Whakatane could not be held by Te Puke and won 32—13 in the A grade basketball match. Fine games were played by I. Grant, D. Harawira and M. Raureti.
In the B grade Whakatane 25 Te Puke 8. J. Brown, S. Heikell and H. Lawson were the pick of the home side.
In the final basketball match, the C grade teams, Whakatane again went well ahead to win 20—1. Their prominent players were M. Shaw, L. Bryers, S. Morice and M. McGee.
