First Of Maraetai Hydro Electricity Units Ready In 1951
(Special to Beacon) Wellington, Thursday
When was it expected that the Maraetai hydro scheme would come into operation, and what plans were in hand, or proposed, immediately to overtake the serious and growing shortage of electric power? asked Mr W. Sullivan in the House of Representatives. In a note, he said that in many districts where the population had increased the insufficiency of power was hindering progress, causing much inconvenience, and delaying supply to outback areas.
Replying, the Minister in Charge of the State Hydro-Electric Department (Mr Semple) said it was expected the first unit at Maraetai would come into operation by the end of 1951 and that the other four units would come into operation progresively thereafter. The Government’s plans to cope with the demand for power were fully stated in his statement last year. Those plans had not been changed, and every step was being taken to implement them. Progress of the plans would be reported in greater detail in this year’s statement which he hoped to present to Parliament shortly. ■
