HORSES ON COUNTY ROADS CAUSING SOME CONCERY
Horses, alleged by councillors tojl be owned by Maoris, were saFTT’o be straying on to county roaHs at night it was stated at the meeting of the Whakatane CouffiJjß Council yesterday. They serious menace, on the road were proving very difficult to stop, councillors pointed cut. u ' Cr A. F. McGougan said that-they were particularly prevalent in the Opouriao Valley and he thought they came down from Ruajuki. It was suggested that a cattle stop on the road might stop the straying beasts. Mr McGougan: It is no-use,:.,—X—. have a stop to the entrance of my property but they still get in. It won’t stop them. Cr D. C. Butler: That is so. Nothing can stop these Maori horses. They just laugh at the stops and walk right across flat footed. Cr R. C. Leslie: I think horses like that deserve a bit of freedom. Cr McGougan said that one way—to get rid of up the ranger. a Tew minutes the animals would be collected by their owners. Cr Butler said he had had the ■ same experience. He had been ahY noyed by horses one night and afte*: ringing the ranger .they had been removed by their Maori owners within one hour.
Cr D. T. Allan: Bush telegraph. It was pointed out to the meeting that little could be done by the inspector as the horses were always left out at night. The only thing that could be done appeared to be to appoint someone in each affected area to watch out for the animals.
