Labour Party Backs Conscription Move
“That this Branch endorses the Government’s policy in connection with compulsory military training and the holding of a referendum on the question,” was a resolution passed at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. It was explained that as compulsory military training was contrary to the Labour Party’s policy many delegates to the recent Labour Conference in Wellington were pledged to vote against any proposal to introduce it, but after hearing the reasons advanced by the Prime Minister they realised they were in an invidious position, as their conscience dictated that they Should support the Government’s proposals. Hence the decision to hold the forthcoming referendum.
