Ruatoki Seeks To Retain Carpenters On Housing Work
"-Advice that the Department of Maori Affairs is considering transferring carpenters, who are at present erecting' houses in Ruatoki area to Te Kaha was received with concern by the Western Tuhoe Tribal Executive at a meeting at Ruatoki this week. Members spoke against this proposed action of the Department and pointed out that housing was still desperately needed at Ruatoki.
They felt that carpenters should not be shifted until the position at Ruatoki had been eased. After further discussion it was decided to take the matter up with the Department to see if the transfers can be stayed in the meantime. The District Nurse and the woman Welfare Officer, who were hoth present at the meeting, after a complete survey of the district, both agreed on the seriousness of the position and promised to do everything possible to ease the situation.
