WHAKATANE HIGH SCHOOL COMPETES WELL AT SPORTS

The annual basketball tournament among teams from Bay of Plenty secondary schools, and the annual rugby matches between the first and second fifteens of Tauranga College and Whakatane District High School were held in Tauranga last week. Although the day was fine at Whakatane, quite heavy rain fell in Tauranga for a while, which rather spoiled the football. The girls, playing on concrete courts, were not so seriously affected. The full basketball results were: ■Whakatane A v .Tauranga lost 9—13, v Waihi won 14—3, v Katikati won 13—1, v Te Puke won 19—7. Whakatane B v Tauranga lost 2—9, v Katikati drawn 3—3, v Waihi won 11—5, v Te Puke won 6—5. Whakatane C v Tauranga won 7—3, v Katikati won 7 3, v Waihi won 11—2, v Te Puke won 3—2. Tauranga College teams finished first on the day’s play with 22 points, Whakatane District High School being second with 19 Rugby Teams Lose The Whakatane first fifteen was beaten by Tauranga College first fifteen 11—3, scores which by no means give a measure of the relative merits of the teams. The Whakatane boys adapted themselves better to the wet and slippery conditions, and territorially had the advantage over the greater part of the game. When their forwards’ loose rushes' carried play to their opponents’ goal line they just missed scoring on several occasions. D. Bridges scored Whakatane’s only try. Whakatane’s second fifteen, weakened and disorganised through sickness and replacements, was overwhelmed by the Tauranga College second fifteen by 32—0.
