COWARDLY CAT TERRORISED BY FIVE SPARROWS
Believe it or not, at Whakatane there is a cat which is afraid of five birds. Since Thursday the poorspirited creature has been missing and its owner is wondering when it is going to appear again. It all started when this cat, which is not a tomcat, began stalking a sparrbw on a lawn near the house. The wily bird sighted the cat and kept hopping and flying just out of reach of a questing paw. Near the house the cat sprang but missed as the bird flew up to the eaves where several other sparrows were perched. Down below the cat growled disappointingly—and then it happened. About half a dozen birds dived down on the bewildered animal in a manner reminiscent of the divebombing so popular with the air forces during the war. The cat gave one startled yelp and shot across the lawn to disappear under an old shed, with the birds close behind. So far it has not been seen although plaintive cries from under the building leave no doubt as to its location.
The sparrows appear to have set up a guard and are still watching the shed. They refuse to let the cat (which is too frightened, anyway) come out.
