HUNT HAD GREAT DAY AT TE TEKO ON SATURDAY

Saturday’s hunt at Te Teko was possibly the best day’s outing the Rangitaiki Ward of the Opotiki Hunt Club has had this season. Weather was gloriously fine, the ground in good order and the course tough enough to be inteersting without any real danger spots. Officially, the morning’s rendezvous was the Te Teko hall, but some of the early comers were able to make time to discuss prospects down the road and round the corner. Following morning tea, the hunt got under way, the Huntsman, Mr T. Black having met the Ward Master, Mr G. Fogerty with 12£- couple of hounds. There were about 45 followers.-

Hounds cast off and worked through to Mr H. T. Bur-r’s property. Early on there seemed something wrong. Something missing. However, when the trouble was realised a trailer was rushed back to Whakatane and, in due course, hopping everything with their usual precision, the pair without whom no hunt ever is quite the same caught up with the main body, much to the relief of another of the followers, whose “green” horse was sadly at sea without the lead of his old pal Nippy. 4 The road double provided some good jumping, and from there the chase worked up into the foothills. There were a few lively runs, but no kills.

However, the day provided plenty of interest for the riders, and not all came through without mishap. Spills there were—one rider had no less than three—but no one got hurt. Welcome sight (for the first time this year) was one of the old hands mounted on his equally well-known map of N.Z., first spotted and hailed with delight by one of Te Teko’s prominent citizens, who was taking advantage of a pause in the proceedings to view the field through glasses. Cause of some congratulatory comment was the secretary’s new headgear, but it is recorded with some regret that his good resolution weakened as the day wore on, and he finished in the more familiar but less ornate cap. Amongst followers were: Mesdames Bennell, McNaught, Todman, L. Davis, T. Black on Little Mexican, Misses Hyland, D. O’Brien, Messrs W. Parks on Kukunui, S. Eivers on Silver Link, J. Moore on Nippy, B. Sharp on Lady, J. Haslam, A. Thompson, J. Thompson on Ben Batle, A. Stewart, R. Bartlett on Bluey, D. C. Stevens on Sholto, D. Henry on Locomotive, D. Reid, R. Orr on Bella, L. Davis, T. Fablsh, E. Moody on Jimmy, J. K. Sisam on Smithy, A. Smith on VB, S. Campbell on Picadilly, W. and L. Goldsmith, B. Thomas, M. Keir, D. Perkinson, R. Miller.
