ENGLISH TAXES AS SEEN BY A NEW ZEALANDER

That New Zealanders are very heavily taxed is the earnest contention of about 90 per cent of the j wage earners in the country but the taxes imposed on those who re-n-j side in England appear to be even • - worse, according to some information contained in a letter from Miss Phillipa J. Winstone, formerly of Whakatane and now nursing in London, in a letter to her mother, Mrs A. W. Winstone, of . Victoria Avenue, Whakatane. To anyone arriving in England • exemption from taxation is granted for six months, provided nothing is being earned. After commencing to earn, a personal allowance of £llO, plus half of the earned income as a living allowance, is allowed. But from then on the taxation department begins to take an interest and from the first £SO demands 3/--out of each pound. Up to the next £2OO the tune is faster and higher and 6/- from each pound is required for the state coffers. From here the income moves to those of the “higher wage earners” when 9/- from each pound up to £2OOO is claimed by the taxation de- . partment4 What the taxation .is on incomes higher than that Miss Winstone does not state. Beside these contributions to the Government there is a compulsory weekly contribution of 7/1 per week to the National Health, which as something similar to* the health services in the New Zealand social security scheme. In England the employer pays 3/3 and the em : ployee 3/10.
