Strange Visitors Off Coast

A party fishing from the Port Whakatane on Sunday sighted a small whale and a thresher shark, both unusual visitors here.

The whale came quite close to the vessel, and dived so near her stern ths* some of the fishermen feared i heir lines might be carried away. The shark appeared when a fish dropped back into the water from one of their hooks.

They were able to watch it at a distance of only a few yards as. it struck at its prey with its tail, diving after each blow, and finally swallowing the smaller fish.
