Opotiki Women’s Institute Members Visit Waimana W.I.

The July meeting of the Waimana "Women’s Institute was well attended, and there were 30 members present from the Opotiki Institute. An appeal was put forth for a Cub mistress, or some one willing to take over the Cubs. Mrs Hewitt, the president, is writing to a member who is ill in hospital, Mrs Hughes, wishing her a speedy recovery. The roll call was a face cloth for the hospital. A large number were contributed by members and will be taken' to the Whakatane hospital. The Op'Otiki Institute provided the afternoon’s entertainment, Mrs Wilkinson presiding. Mrs Smith sang a bracket of songs most delightfully, “Oh it’s quiet down here” and “Two eyes of Grey.” A humorous Mime, entitled “In the Kitchen” was thoroughly enjoyed, also Mrs McKillop’s elocutionary items, “Balancing the Budget” and “Tell Your Husband Now.” The Choir conducted by Mrs Quirk, sang most pleasingly “Evensong” and “augh and Grow Fat.”

Two competitions were arranged by the Opotiki Institute. Getting the greatest number of members signatures and birth places, was won by Mrs L. Grey, Taneatua. Making a set of false teeth from plasticine and maize, caused lots of fun and Mrs Campbell, Opotiki, was the winner.

The day’s competitions drew god entries, Opotiki members doing the judging. Results follow: Worked tray cloth, Mrs F. Bell 1, Mrs Sterling 2, Miss N. Rust 3; apple tart, Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs I. Savage 2, Mrs F. Bell 3; 3 leeks, Mrs F. Bell 1, Mrs F. Sterling 2, Mrs Stevenson 3; best single flower, Mrs Woolfield 1, Mrs Bell 2, Miss J. Stevens 3; best multiple flower, Mrs Bell 1, Mrs M. King 2, Mrs J. Boynton 3; best vegetable, Mrs Kelson 1, Mrs Bell 2, Mrs Hewitt 3. Mrs Hewitt, at the conclusion of the meeting, thanked the visitors for the entertainment, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. She also thanked the hostesses and judges.
