Accident Damages Awarded
Before kfrr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Whakatane on Tuesday lan Rutledge successfully claimed £6O damages arising from an accident in which G. C. O’Brien’s taxi collided with cattle Rutledge was driving. O’Brien unsuccessfully counter-claimed for £l7B 14s 9d damages to the taxi. The Magistrate awarded costs, £l2 17s on the claim and £8 18s on the counter claim, to Rutledge.
The umbrella is alleged to have been invented in China. Mandarins had naper ones, waterproofed with oil. The first man to popularise umbrellas in England was the explorer Jonas Hanway, two hundred years ago. A statue of Hanway stands in j Westminster Abbey.
