A'very enjoyable dance was held in the St John hall on Saturday 'might organised by officers of the St John Ambulance Cadet Division. Harrison’s Orchestra supplied the music. Mr and Mrs Rixon v on the Monte Carlo, and Miss Murphy and Mr Edmondson the Lucky Spot'fox trot.
Whitebait Increasing The amount of Whitebait seen in streams about the Eastern Bay of Plenty lately, has increased considerably in the past few days. Good catches have been reported from Kutarere and larger catches are being trapped in the Whakatane River each week. Although the fish are not very big they are said to be very sweet eating.
Bay of Plenty Roads Roads in the Bay of Plenty are to receive priority No. 1, and the Main Highways Board has been instructed to spend more money in the district than has been the case in the past the chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, told the Whakatane County Council at the monthly meeting. All road work is to be. pushed ahead and sealing is to be done as soon as possible, he added. Rangitaiki Rainfall
A total of 9.37 inches of rain was recorded on the Rangitaiki Plains last month. The heaviest fall was on June 5 with 2.64 inches. The total fall for the six months this year is 35.38 inches and is more than the average for the first six months over the last 10 years, which totalled 28.75 inches. The average fall for June over the past 10 years is 5.39 inches.
Short “Long” Beer Prosecuted in the Magistrate’s Court at Whakatane yesterday Herbert Lindsay Anderson, for serving beer at Matata in a container of a capacity less than lOozs and' not keeping a copy of the price order prominently displayed where customers could 1 examine it, was fined £3, costs £2 12s on the first charge and £l, costs £2 ,12s on the second. Soft Drink Firm Fined
Selling lemonade and ginger beer to which a preservative not -specifically permitted by the Food' and Drugs Regulations 1946 had been added cost C. L. Innes and Co. Ltd. fines of £5, costs £3 2s 6d, on each of two charges heard by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the * Magistrate’s Court at Whakatane yesterday. Mr G. Otley prosecuted for the Department of Health and Mr B. S. Barry defended.
Fire in Mercantile Store Fire broke out in Messrs Dalgety and Co’s store in the Strand yesterday afternoon, ’ but caused only minor damage to the wood lining on the wall dividing the store from the shop and office. It. is believed the fire was caused, by an immersion heater parked against the wall. Staff members were holding the outbreak when the Fire Brigade ar-' rived just 34 minutes after the first alarm and settled the matter in short order.
