Tadpole That Won't Grow Up

A nine-month’s-old tadpole was still wagging his tail this week in defiance of biological laws, says an English correspondent. Naturalists called him the Peter Pan of Tadpoles because he should have changed into a frog last July. Sheila Osborne, 11, of Aberdeen, Scotland, reared Peter and a batch of relatives from spawn she collected near her home.

When he didn’t turn into a frog like the others, Sheila wrote to the BBC’s naturalist, who advised a diet of worms and roast beef. Still Peter didn’t change. The Aberdeen University naturalist, Robert Carick’s comment was: “I suppose things go wrong with tadpoles just as they do with humans. It might be a thyroid deficiency.”
