Taneatua Card Evening Continuing the series of card parties being run by the Junior National Party, progressive 500 was played on Thursday evening. There was'a good attendance. Prize winners were Miss Brunton, Mr M. Doran, Mrs Grey and Mr R. Hill.
Speakers at Ruatoki Mr W. Sullivan, M.P., and Mr D. C. Butler, chairman of the Whakatane Branch of the National Party, were guest speakers at a conference of National members of the Eastern Maori Electorate at Ruatoki during the week-end. Sir Apirana Ngata was also one of the main speakers.
Five “Jacks”—All Barmen Five barmen at a Whakatane hotel have a problem. The problem is what can they call each other. All five have the same. Christian name, that of “Jack.” It is unusual to find any business. where so many of the employees have the same name, least of all behind the bar of a- hotel. Four of them work the handles in the public bar and the fifth is kept busy in the private bar.
Many Dancers at Whakatane Dancers from many parts of the Bay of Plenty attended a gay dance in the St. John Hall, Whakatane, $n Saturday evening when they danced to the lively music of Freddie Burt and his orchestra. A gay gordon was won by Mr A. Gow and Miss R. Dockray and the monte carlo by Mr G. Gartshore and Miss B. Pearson Supper music was played by Miss D. Stewart and G. Patterson. The M.C. was Mr K. Needham.
