Traffic Inspector Wants Pedestrian Crossing's Removed
The absence of black and white poles on all but one of the pedestrian crossings within the borough was mentioned by Mr M. C. Bridge, traffic inspector, in his monthly report to the Whakatane Borough Council last Monday night. He suggested that they be erected as soon as possible and also that the crossings be painted with continuous lines in order to have them comply with the regulations. The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, pointed out that it was a serious thing not to have the pedestrian crossings properly marked and might result in the council being put to some expense in the event of an accident. The crossings were very important to the town. Agreeing with the Mayor, Cr R. S. Buttimore said that without properly marked crossings there would be an increase of J walking. Eliminate Crossings •; Mr Bridge also suggested that two pedestrian crossings be eliminated. The one from the Road Services to the National Bank of New Zealand at the northern end of the town and one at the southern end ■from the continuation of the footpath past the fire:,... station ' across to ■the billiard saloon.' ; He stated that tbe amount of traffic using the two "crossings was very small and did not . warrant the installation of poles and continual maintenance. Councillors were not m full agreement with the inspector to■ dlimintgf'" ate the crossings and' it Was left to he investigated by the Works Committee. :i-:/
