COMPETITION COMMENCES TOMORROW The 1949 basketball competitions at Whakatane get under way tomorrow when the first games will be played on the high school courts starting at 1.15 p.m. The Association is still very short of referees

and is asking for old players and anyone interested who would take up that position to referee the games on Saturday afternoons. Tomorrow’s games:— 1.15 p.m. The Mcßaes v Ruatoki (hard court), referee Mrs Dippy; Paroa B v Taneatua (grass court), Mrs Shapley; Olympics v Poroporo (No. 2 grass court). 2.15, Redwings v Paroa A (hard court), Mrs P. Lynds; The Stewarts v Matatua (grass court), Mrs Sisam. TWO SECTIONS IN THIS YEAR’S COMPETITIONS Ten teams have entered for the Whakatane Basketball competition this year which commences tomorrow at the Whakatane High School courts. The competitions have been divided into two sections. The winners of each section will play off for the championship. If necessary, at the end of the first round, the teams will be handicapped if it is found that any team is above the average. The draw is:— Section 1: Round 1: The Mcßaes v Ruatoki, Redwings v Paroa A, Olympics v Poroporo. Round 2: The Mcßaes v Redwings, Ruatoki v Olympics, Paroa A v Poroporo. Round 3: The Mcßaes v Paroa A, Redwings v Olympics, Ruatoki v Poroporo. Round 4: The Mcßaes v Olympics, Ruatoki v Paroa A, Redwings v Poroporo: Round 5: Ruatko v Redwings, Paroa A v .Olympics, The Mcßaes v Poroporo. Section II: Round 1: Paroa B v Taneatua, The Stewarts v Matatua. Round II: Paroa B v The Stewarts, Taneatua v Matatua. Round II: Paroa B v Matatua, Taneatua v The Stewarts. WHAKATANE TEAMS PLAY AT TAUKANGA Travelling to Tauranga on Monday the Olympics basketball team of Whakatane won the marching competition and gained highest points for uniform. Another Whakatane team, Redwings, also went through. Both teams played several games with some success. Results of games played:— Olympics 23 v Matamata D 6, Olympics 15 v Tauranga Maori 2, Ollmpics 25 v Waihi 2, Waitemata 12 v Olympics 6, Redwings 9 v Morrinsville 1, Tauranga C 23 v Redwings 5, Tauranga Maori C 18 v Redwings 5.
