Miss A. Luttrell, Awakeri, has returned home after a month’s holiday touring the South Island.
Miss Brenda Griffiths, of the staff of the Middlemore Hospital, Auckland, and formerly of Chester, Bugland, visited Whakatane during the week-end. _ '
Capts A. G. Wallace, Master Son, and L. G. Buckly, Auckland, were recipients of the Pioneer Axe, highest honour the Legion can confer, at the annual conference of the Legion of Frontiersmen at Whakatane last week-end.
Mrs W. S. Henderson, who lias been librarian of the Whakatane Public Library for the past year, has resigned from the position and it has been filled by Mrs H. Carr. This appointment was approved by the library committee recently. Mrs Carr has previously held the position of librarian.
Mr H. D. London, secretary of the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch of the Home Servicemen’s Association, attended the Northern District convention of the Association at Cambridge last week-end. Some aspects of the business of the convention will be covered in an article which has to be held over until Monday through space shortage.
Mr Richard Cobbe has been ap- yi pointed an assessor to act with Mr a Justice Stanton in the land pensation case. Munro v The Tauranga Borough Council. This is the last appointment of an assessor to be made in New Zealand, as under the new Act which comes into force on July 1, all cases of this nature will be heard by the Land Sales Appeal Court under Mr Justice Archer.
