SHOULD BACHELOR GIRLS ENTERTAIN IN BED-SITTERS?
Should a young woman entertain the boy friend in a bedsitting room?
A very interesting and animated discussion was the chief feature of the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers last Tuesday. Mrs. W. Gow, who chaired the meeting, read from the League’s magazine a true incident concerning a landlady and a young woman who had applied for the tenancy of a vacant bed-sitting room. The lady of the house was immediately attracted to her prospective tenant, and offered her the room on two conditions—firstly, there was to be no washing on Sundays, and, secondly, there was to be no entertaining of D*oy friends in the bed-sitting room, but the lounge would be available for her use on two nights of * the week only.
The girl refused the offer, saying that she desired a room where she could entertain people. / Was It Too Much? Was the landlady expecting too much in making, such stipulations to a typical young woman of today? That was the question under debate.
After Mrs Stenhouse had opened the discussion by speaking from the point of view of the landlady, Mrs B. Woollams raised points in favour of Jhe girl’s attitude. Many members then added their opinions. In brief, those in favour of the landlady’s attitude, said she was to be admired for setting such high standards for her tenants. Lack of Understanding?
Those upholding the young woman, said the landlady lacked understanding. A young woman away from home is better entertaining in Ler bed-sitting room than being forced to meet her friends in the streets.
When the question was put to the vote, a show of hands revealead that the majority of members agreed with the landlady’s attitude. During the afternoon Mrs T. H. Fergusson rendered two vocal solos, and Mrs Brebner gave the thought for the week. Mrs W. Gow presented a report on the quarterly provincial meeting of the League, which was held in St. David’s Church, Auckland.
