Dominion Executive Of Red Cross Meets: Delegate’s Report

Mrs A. W. Winstone, Whakatane, attended a meeting of the Dominion Executive of the N.Z. Red Cross Society at Wellington Headquarters last week.

Discussing the meeting, she said Miss Iris Crooke, Director General of V.A.D.’s, was welcomed back from overseas where she attended, as N.Z. Red Cross delegate, the International Red Cross Conference in Sweden, and also visited Red Cross relief centres and displaced persons camps in Europe. On exhibition were souvenirs of the conference, photographs, books, etc. brought back by Miss Crooke. A letter from the British Red Cross was received, thanking the N.Z. Society for donation of £3OO, medical supplies for Middle East relief and a stove, donated and despatched by Otago Red Cross Centre. The secretary reported that Red Cross Centres in New Zealand had repaid the £3OO forwarded, and dohated a further £65, and more was promised.

Lady Limerick wrote that the Red Cross Relief Mission cost £45,000 to maintain for three months, and over £17,500 had already come in. A letter of thanks for urgent medical supplies had also been received from cur Lady’s Missionary League in the Islands. Donations of £9 5s for Indonesian relief, and £289 10s 7d for relief of Basques in Spain were received from the New Zealand Federation of Labour, with the request that it be applied mainly for women and children. This has been forwarded to the Spanish Red Cross. The balance sheet, remits for the Dominion Council and arrangements for the annual meeting were discussed.

Reports of V.A.D.’s and J.R.C. showed a steady improvement in membership and work. Miss Crooke was warmly congratulated by the chairman and members of the executive on being awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal.
