Traffic Licences Issued

Forty-three driving licences were issued by the Whakatane County inspector, Mr A. Carling, he revealed in 'his report to the Whakatane County Council this week. Three new heavy traffic licences were taken out and seven licences to a value of £l7 11s 6d were collected.

£4500 Ragwort Grant Wanted A grant of £4500 for the eradication of ragwort in the county has been applied for by the Whakatane County Council it was revealed at yesterday’s monthly council meeting. Of the total sum £SOO is for Crown Lands, £4ot)o for unindividualised Maori lands, including £SOO for the Ruatoki area. Ohope Community Centre

Plans for "Ohope’s Community Centre Hall were further discussed at a recent meeting of the Ohope Progress League’s executive. First major task is to be the raising of money, which will be subject to Government subsidy, and the executive mapped out a tentative scheme which will be brought before a general meeting soon. Light Inspection

Several motorists received an unexpected jolt last Friday night when theiy were hauled up in Commerce Street, Whakatane, by traffic inspectors who inspected their car lights. Many passed the inspection but quite a number were warned to have their lights corrected to the right angles. The element of surprise caught the majority of motorists “out.”

Instructions For Instructors Major Higgins and Mrs Higgins, or Auckland, are expected at Whakatane today. Major Higgins is one of the foremost horse riding instructors of the world today and is coming to give instruction to the instructors of the Whakatane Pony Club. He will hold classes during the week-end and his instruction, it is expected, will be of much benefit to the club.

A Name Wanted When the new Rugby field at the Whakatane Domain is completed it has been suggested in some quarters that the Rugby Union should give it a new name. Something appropriate. One person has already mentioned as a possible name just “Rugby Field” but whatever the name, there is a feeling that it should be called something distinct from the Domain.

Animals Impounded Twenty-seven horses, 19 cattle and one bull were impounded or removed from the Paroa, Poroporo, Te Teko, Nukuhou and Taneatua districts during last month the county inspector, Mr A. Carling, told the Whakatane County Council in his report to this week’s monthly meeting. This included one lame horse and a sick cow, both of which were destroyed. Driving, pound and sale fees totalled £49 17s 6d. Caledonian Dance There was a large crowd at the King Street Hall, Whakatane, on Tuesday night to the Caledonian oancing class dance. A monte carlo was won by Miss B. Martindale, Wellington, and Mr A. M. Comer, Whakatane. The music was played by Harrison’s Orchestra. Extras were played by Miss D. Stewart and Mr G. Paterson. Messrs D. McKenzie and McMillan played pipe music. The M.C. was Mr H. Mole. The Beacon Thanked Special thanks were due to the newspapers in the Bay of Plenty for the manner in which they had co-operated in the furthering of the work of the Federation, said the President of the Bay of Plenty Province of Federated Farmers at the conclusion of the annual conference at Whakatane. He made mention of the assistance the Beacon, had given in publishing news of importance to farmers.

New Field Well Advanced Work is now well advanced on the new Rugby field at the Whakatane Domain and is expected to be well finished for the official opening on the King’s Birthday when Whakatane plays Rangitaiki. A new road and gates to the main entrance have been constructed off Domain Road. On the field the grass has come away well and last week-end the tall new goal posts were erected. When the ground has been completed it is expected that it will be one of the best in the Bay of Plenty.
