PADDY’S MARKET AT TANEATUA FOR MEMORIAL FUND

Concerted efforts of the citizens of Taneatua and surrounding district resulted in a monster Paddy’s Market in the Taneatua hall on Friday afternoon and evening. Proceeds are for the War Memorial Community Centre. Stalls were run by the members of the Plunket Society, Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, Manchester Unity Lodge, local farmers and' a White Elephant stall. Every stall was stocked with quantities of cakes, jams, sweets, etc. The farmers’ stall was a sight to delight any housewife’s heart with its huge quantities of home-killed meat, vegetables, eggs, etc. On the White Elephant stall practically anything could be obtained with large quantities of good quality used clothing and footwear predominating. The other stalls depended principally on delectable sponge cakes, jams, needlework for their revenue.

The Plunket Society ran a baby show in conjunction with their stall with Nurse North as judge. Miss North had such difficulty in deciding amongst the many lovely babies present that she had in several cases to give ties. Results:—•

Up to six months, Roger Cairns 1, Allan Ducker and Delcie Foreman equal 2. Six months to 12 months, Jill Sisam and Donald Merlie, equal, 1, Brian Oden 2. One year to 2 years, Judy Foreman and Gilbert Sisam, equal, 1, Diane Greenslade, Robin Knowles and Kathryn Lawn equal, 2.

Members of the Women’s Institute provided and served afternoon tea and supper. Madame X, sponsored by the Women’s Institute, proved a very popular and w T ell patronised innovation. The local Girl Guides were very helpful in numerous directions during the afternoon and the Brownies gave a donation from their funds. In the evening the businessmen came into their own, when they carried on their usual daytime occupation of inveigling the cash from the customers’ pockets. Very successful they were, too. They also instituted a bottle drive, which proved an amazing success. The whole thing was a great effort all round and the sum made will be substantial.
