Obituary

[ MR ALLAN WOODBERRY Mr Allan Woodberry a wellknown and esteemed resident of Otakiri died suddenly at his residence recently. Mr Woodberry was born at Deloraine, Tasmania, in 1882 and came to New Zealand as a young man of 21. After working at Tokomaru Bay for a few years he. married and took up farming in the Gisborne district. He came to the Bay of Plenty in 1915 and took over a property at Otakiri which he farmed successfully until his death.

He had the interests of the district at heart and was one of the few early settlers who were instrumental in having a school established at Otakiri and was a member of the school committee for a number of years; a director of the Tarawera Dairy Co., which operated in the district some years ago, and had' served on a number of other local committees. He was always a, willing helper with any worthwhile object. ■ a-,'

He gave the site where the Otakiri Hall now stands and had recently donated additional land togive better access to the hall and. „ was still a member of the hall committee at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, one > son, and four daughters. There are seven grandchildren.'; ; - MR C. H. WHITE , A most highly respected and popular settler, Mr Charles Harold White, died recently at Whakatane. Born in Somerset, Mr White came to New Zealand with his parents, 54 years ago and has resided in the Wainui district for the feat 40 years. He was a veteran of the First World War and saw much service in Palestine with the 4th Waikato Squadron of the Auckland Mounted Rifles. - v Mr White took an active part in district affairs having been a member of the Wainui School Cranmittee, senior advisory member to the Young Farmers’ Club and chairman of the Wainui Settlers’ Association. As a member of the Whakatane and Ohope Bowling Clubs tie was most popular. He is survived by a wife and son.
