New Rugby Ground Entrance Work is now in progress on the Domain Road entrance to the new Rugby ground, Mr C. D. Molesworth, borough foreman, stated in his April report to the Whakatane Borough Council. The work at present is the construction of a road to the main gateway. Station Road Closed Closed early Monday afternoon to traffic the Station Road to Whakatane West was still being scoured by water yesterday. In some parts water was still going over the road. Instead of using the Whakatane West Station traffic was diverted to Taneatua and Awakeri. Pie Cart For Domain A private application to establish a pie cart at the Whakatane Domain on sports days and football days was granted by the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night. The same applicants, it was stated, have plans to establish a pie cart in a vacant section opposite the Pohuturoa Rock. Pony Club Rally Sunday’s heavy rain Spoiled the Pony Club’s rally at the Whakatane Domain, but a few hardy enthusiasts turned out for a short session of instruction. However, it was decided, when heavy rain set in in earnest, that it might be better to try to hold the rally next Sunday instead. Borough Building Permits Building permits to a value of £11,450 were issued by the Whakatane Borough Council during April the electrical engineer, Mr F. W. Lysaght, reported to the council on Monday night. Altogether 17 permits were issued six of which were for dwellings and six for garages. Others released were: Additions to residences one, sheds two, shed repairs one, and temporary cottages one. Society Praised Praise for the Whakatane Beautifying Society and all the work it had done in making the town more presentable was expressed by several members of the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night. It was stated that the council had been saved much money by the Society, which had carried out several voluntary jobs throughout the borough and had made many helpful suggestions to the council. Misuse of Conveniences A forceful description of a small area behind the public conveniences at Pohuturoa Rock was made by Cr E. R. Dillicar to the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night. In no uncertain terms Cr Dillicar referred to the fact that some individuals were not bothering to go into the conveniences but w'ere going behind the building. It was now j in a very bad state and had been made worse by broken beer bottles. It was decided to have some barrier erected to fence off the rear of the building.

Saturday’s Working Bee In spite of somewhat foul weather, 25 men and one woman turned out on Saturday morning in response to the Whakatane Beautifying Society’s appeal for volunteer workers to help clean up the old town cemetery. Though showers interrupted the work, about a third of the job was completed. Next Saturday the Society hopes to be able to complete the work, and is appealing for 50 volunteers. With the encouraging response last Saturday in mind, the organisers think the required number will be exceeded.
