Concrete Bridge Shaken By Log
With the extra water draining into the rivers since Saturday the usual sedate speed of most of the waterways was increased considerably. In the Rangitaiki and Whakatane Rivers the downward flow was tremendous and huge logs were swept about like play things.
As an indication of the speed in the Whakatane River the arches of the main bridge to the borough were just a few inches clear of the water. At one stage Monday afternoon a huge tree was swept in to the bridge. Its course was hardly halted although the concrete structure was shaken and it swayed easily for a short time after the first contact. The log barely stopped as it was swept towards the sea.
